2009 Build – “The Arthur B. Johns Build”
Arthur B. Johns (B.A. Sc., M. Sc., P. Eng.) was an inaugural board member of Habitat for Humanity – New Tecumseth Chapter in 2002. Despite a full-time job managing a busy Engineering firm and serving as an active member of his Church council in Cookstown, Art gladly became involved with Habitat. Art accepted the dubious challenge of forming the Chapter’s first Build Committee. Art steered through many challenges in this committee, using his talents and resources to build our first Habitat home in New Tecumseth, in 2004. Later, he served as chairperson for the Chapter’s Board of Directors. Art was one of Canada's most distinguished engineers. He left his mark everywhere from the Medical Sciences Building at the University to Toronto, to the Gardiner Expressway, to the Health Sciences complex at Memorial University in St. John's. During his 40+ year career at Morrison Hershfield, he would pick up the profession's top honours, receiving gold medals from the Professional Engineers of Ontario and The Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers. "Art always took the time to help, listen and pass on his knowledge and experience," said Catherine Karakatsanis, senior vice-president at Morrison Hershfield. "He truly was a remarkable person, a very rare person." Though he gave his heart and soul to the job, Art was remembered as a very involved family man. "He was always there for us, and I know he was incredibly busy with work," said his son, Scott. "Work was always important but I think family came first. He always made time for those important things." It was a love that continued even as he grew older and become a grandfather. On Oct. 24, 2006, the man who rose from a child of the Depression era to become the president of Morrison Hershfield died one day after his 70th birthday following a nine-month fight with multiple myeloma. Arthur B. Johns was a truly remarkable gentleman, who loved his family, friends, his career, and life. In Art’s memory, the New Tecumseth Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has named our 2009 build, “The Arthur B. Johns Build”. |
